Crunchy Chocolate Quinoa Crisps

Homemade chocolate quinoa crisps on parchment paper, with toasted quinoa coated in dark chocolate and sprinkled with sea salt.

These homemade chocolate quinoa crisps are a crunchy, gluten-free treat made with simple ingredients and a satisfying snap. Cooked quinoa is air-fried until perfectly toasted, then coated in rich dark chocolate and sprinkled with sea salt. They’re easy to make, endlessly snackable, and inspired by the popular store-bought version—only fresher and better.

Why Toasted Quinoa Works So Well in This Recipe

Unlike puffed quinoa, which can be harder to find or expensive to buy, using cooked and air-fried quinoa gives these crisps a deeper, nuttier flavor and a satisfying crunch. Toasting also draws out a warm, earthy taste that complements the richness of dark chocolate. Best of all, it’s an easy way to turn leftover quinoa into something totally snack-worthy.

Tips for Perfect Chocolate Quinoa Crisps Every Time

To get the best texture, make sure the quinoa is well-dried before air frying—spread it out on a towel or tray for 20–30 minutes first. When melting the chocolate, use gentle heat (microwave in short bursts or use a double boiler) to avoid seizing. And don’t skip the sea salt sprinkle at the end—it balances the sweetness and makes the chocolate pop.

NUTRITION

Quinoa: A complete plant-based protein rich in fiber, magnesium, and antioxidants; supports muscle repair, digestion, and heart health.

Dark Chocolate: Contains flavonoids that may reduce inflammation and support heart and brain health; the higher the cocoa content, the better.

Sea Salt: Provides trace minerals and enhances flavor balance; a small pinch helps round out the sweetness of chocolate.

SUBSTITUTIONS

Quinoa: This recipe works best with cooked and air-fried quinoa, but you can try store-bought puffed quinoa if you have it on hand. Just skip the air frying step and stir it straight into the melted chocolate.

Dark Chocolate: Use any dark chocolate chips or bar you like—70% cacao or higher is ideal. For a dairy-free option, choose vegan chocolate. For refined sugar-free, look for bars sweetened with coconut sugar, stevia, or monk fruit.

Sea Salt: Flaky sea salt adds the best texture and flavor, but you can use fine sea salt in a pinch—just use less so it doesn’t overpower the chocolate.

Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • Sauce pan to cook the quionia
  • mixing bowl
  • Parchment Paper
  • Baking Sheet for setting the chocolate
  • Silicone spatula or spoon
  • Mesh tray or liner for your air fryer so quinoa wasnt fall through (aluminum foil works in a pinch)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cooked quinoa cooled and fluffed
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips or chopped bar around 70% cacao
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Optional: ½ tsp vanilla extract dash of cinnamon, or orange zest for flair

Instructions

Prepare the Quinia

  • Cook the Quinoa. 1/2 cup of uncooked quinoa cooked with 1 cup of water on low for about 30 minutes.
  • Pat cooked quinoa with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  • Let it air dry on the counter for 20–30 minutes for best crisping.

Air fry the Quinoa

  • Preheat air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  • Line the basket or tray with parchment (or use a mesh tray).
  • Spread quinoa in a thin, even layer.
  • Air fry for 10–15 minutes, shaking halfway, until golden and crisp.
  • Let cool completely.

Melt the Chocoalte

  • In a microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth.
  • (Or use a double boiler on the stove.)

Mix and Spread

  • Stir the toasted quinoa into the melted chocolate until evenly coated.
  • Spread the mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, about ¼-inch thick.
  • Sprinkle with sea salt

Chil and Break

  • Refrigerate until set, about 20–30 minutes.
  • Or air dry for an hour
  • Break into pieces
  • Store in an airtight container at room temp or in the fridge. (I prefer room temperature)

Notes

Make sure your cooked quinoa is well-dried before air frying—it should feel light and not sticky. Damp quinoa won’t crisp up properly.
Store crisps in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. For longer shelf life or warmer climates, keep them in the fridge.
Experiment with different chocolate chip brands and cocoa levels.
Enjoy on their own, crumble over yogurt, or pack in lunchboxes for a satisfying, gluten-free treat.
You can toast a larger batch of quinoa ahead of time and store it in a sealed jar for future recipes.
